Alen BreatheSmart 45i True HEPA Air Purifier Features and Specifications

Alen BreatheSmart 45i True HEPA Air Purifier is a relatively large and heavy air purifier that should be placed in a semi-permanent position on the floor with some 2 feet (~0.6m) free areas on its sides to improve the airflow.

The unit features two side air intakes and one bottom air intake, and one back air exhaust - the unit not only purifies the air but it also mixes the air in the room, decreasing the air temperature difference between ceiling air and floor air, improving the air quality even further.

The physical dimensions of the unit are (H x W x D) 25 x 15 x 8.5 inches (~63.5 x 38.1 x 21.6 cm) and it weighs ~15 pounds (~6.8 kg).

The power cord is 7'8" (~230 cm) long, helping the users find the optimum position for the unit.

Also, the unit is offered in several colors, including white, gray, oak, graphite, espresso, stainless steel, etc.

Depending on the mode of use, Alen BreatheSmart 45i power consumption ranges from 1.1 to 50 Watts, while noise levels range from 23 dB (lowest fan speed) to 49 dB (highest fan speed).

The unit features excellent air filtration - it can capture 99.99% of 0.1 microns or large airborne particles, including bacteria, aerosols containing viruses, pollen, dust, and other airborne dirt and potential allergens.

Alen 45i air purifier features a CADR rating of 245. Also, it comes 4 (four) fan speeds - their CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating of:

  • Speed 1: 70 CFM,
  • Speed 2: 135 CFM,
  • Speed 3: 175 CFM,
  • Speed 4: 215 CFM.

Alen BreatheSmart 45i air purifier comes with an air quality sensor that measures the air quality and displays it in the form of different ring colors around the On/Off button:

  • Blue: Very low level of airborne particles detected
  • Green: Low level of airborne particles detected
  • Orange: Medium level of airborne particles detected
  • Red: High level of airborne particles detected
  • Purple: Very high level of airborne particles detected

The unit thus features Auto mode, which allows the unit to monitor the air quality and, if/when required, to adjust the fan speed automatically.

Alen BreatheSmart 45i Controls

Alen BreatheSmart 45i features a very simple set of controls on the top of the unit:

control panel

- Ionizer button turns On and Off the ionizer. When the ionizer is turned Off, ozone production is 0 (zero); when the ionizer is turned On, ozone production is ~0.001 ppm (parts per million).

Note: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires ozone output of indoor medical devices to be no more than 0.05 ppm, which is at least 50(!) times higher than the ozone production by Alen BreatheSmart 45i when the ionizer is turned On.

Personally, when turning On the unit after some time of inactivity, turn also the Ionizer On. Or, if the air quality drops significantly for whatever reason, turn the ionizer On and increase the fan speed to the maximum.

- Filter button notifies the user when it is time to replace the air filter and lets the user reset the air filter warning.

- Light control button lets the user set the control panel light on High, Low, and Off.

- Power button lets the user turn On/Off the air purifier.

- Speed button lets the user set the required fan speed (4 fan speeds available).

- Auto mode button allows the user to turn the Auto mode On, letting the unit automatically adjust the fan speed according to the measured air quality.

Note: Personally, Alen BreatheSmart 45i air purifier is very simple to use and maintain the unit, but when the unit arrives, be sure to read the Owner's Guide, just in case. After unpacking the unit (following the instructions), set the unit to Auto mode and forget it until the next maintenance period arrives.

- Lock button allows the user to lock the controls to prevent accidental setup changes.

Alen BreatheSmart 45i supports using Alen's Air App, but it can be controlled using its Control Panel only.

Alen BreatheSmart 45i Air Filters

Alen BreatheSmart 45i comes with a 1-year limited warranty or with a lifetime warranty with the product registration and Active Air Filter subscription.

Alen BreatheSmart 45i supports the use of several air filters, including:

- B4-Pure / FL40-Pure,

- B4-Fresh / FL40-Silver-Carbon,

- B4-Odor / FL40-MP,

- FL40-H.

Four (at the moment) filter options allow the user to customize the air purifier according to the user's needs.

filter replacement

However, air filters are replaced every 9-12 months, and although the FL40-H air filter is the most expensive one, personally, one should go for it - this air filter is intended for aerosolized viruses, bacteria, allergens, heavy smoke, odor, dander, dust, mold, pet fur, VOCs, etc.

Note: FL40-H air filter, for example, contains ~2.3 pounds (~1.05 kg) of activated carbon, which is rather a respectful amount for a home air filter.

alen 45i mLong Story Short: With its simple use and maintenance and excellent air purification level, Alen BreatheSmart 45i is a very popular home air purifier with excellent reviews by almost countless users.
