Honeywell HPA600B Features and Specifications

Honeywell HPA600B is a large unit and should be placed on permanent location, preferably on the bare floor.

Physical dimensions are (LxWxH) 16.73 x 9.45 x 24.25 inches (~42.5 x 24 x 61.6 cm) and it weighs 32 pounds (~14.5 kg). In order to move the unit around, it features castors wheels and in order to carry it around, it features two side handles.

Note: Honeywell HPA600B is stable unit, but personally, don't let the kids and pets play next to it, since it can be tipped over if pushed with sufficient force.

The Honeywell HPA600B air purifier has been AHAM verifid for use in rooms up to 325 square feet (~30 m2) and its CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) ratings are 210 for smoke, 184 for dust and 205 for pollen, which could be better, at least at the first sight.

Thanks to its air filtration system, the Honeywell HPA600B is a true HEPA air purifier, filtering out 99.97% of 0.1 microns or larger particles, while 'standard' true HEPA air purifiers filter out 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles.

This 0.1 vs 0.3 microns difference is not large at first, but don't forget that even such small particles can cause issues - after all, the smaller the particles, the easier it is for it to reach deep inside the lungs of a person or a pet.

Also, the Honeywell HPA600B filters out up to 99.9% of certain bacteria and viruses, which can be very helpful in the flu season.

Particle sizes vary depending on the pollutant type, and generally they are: pollen 10-100 microns, dust 0.5 - 10 microns, tobacco smoke 0.01 - 4 microns, mold spores 3-40 microns, viruses 0.005 - 0.3 microns, bacteria 0.3 - 60 microns etc. Odors and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are molecule size pollutants and are removed using activated carbon filters.

Honeywell HPA600B console is very simple and intuitive to use.

Unit features five cleaning modes/levels:

- Sleep mode (Level 1) offers very quiet operation, and is recommended for night hours. Also, control panel lights are dimmed.

- Germ mode (Level 2) is operation mode recommended for cold and flue season to help reduce amount of germs in the air - air passes through the filters slowly, giving germs and other very small particles enough time to get captured.

- General Cleaning mode (Level 3) is best for general air cleaning and for removing airborne smoke, dust, pet dander and other similar particles.

- Allergen mode (Level 4) is used for reducing many types of airborne allergens.

- Turbo mode is used when there is a need to clean large volume of air quickly.

When the unit is turned on, it starts with Level 2 (Germ mode) and stays in that mode until changed by the user. Maximum power consumption of the Honeywell HPA600B is ~44 watts.

Auto Sensing Mode allows the unit to constantly monitor air quality (amount of pollutants) and react if required by changing the cleaning mode:

- Blue light: level of particles and VOCs is low, and air purifier operates at the Level 2.

- Amber light: unit detected medium air quality and the unit starts to operate at the Level 3.

- Red light: unit detected low air quality and it starts to operate at the Level 4.

Although in the rooms where windows and doors are kept mostly closed, there isn't the need for the unit to work in Level 3 (or 4 or Turbo mode), but having Auto Sensing Mode 'On' is generally a good idea - when the air quality changes, the unit will react and the user will notice the change in the air purifier's operation (different light, air speed, etc.).

Auto-Off Time Mode allows the user to set the unit to shut itself off automatically after 2, 4 or 8 hours of operation. If the cleaned room is being constantly used, personally, set the unit to Level 2, turn on the Auto Sensing Mode and forget it for some time.

Note: when the unit arrives, before turning it on, be sure to thoroughly read the manual that comes with the unit.

Honeywell HPA600B Air Filtration System

Honeywell HPA600B features air inlets on both sides and air exhaust on the upper side of the unit.

Such air flow leads to the better air mixing in the cleaned room - users sometimes have a sensation that the air is warmer or colder, but it is just mixed better with the smaller difference in temperature between floor and ceiling air.

For short, Honeywell HPA600B is air purifier, not air heater or cooler.

honeywell hpa600b hepa filters

Honeywell HPA600B requires two air filters to be installed - one air filter on both sides.

Air filtration system is based on 4 layers of air filtration.

Mesh pre-filters trap and filter out large airborne particles, protecting the air filters and prolonging their operating time. Mesh pre-filters are washable and can be vacuumed from time to time - just follow maintenance procedures found in the manual.

Air filters feature HEPA air filter (captures 99.97% of 0.1 microns or larger particles), anti-bacterial coating (inhibits growth of bacteria) and activated carbon layers (traps odors and VOCs).

These three layers are part of the one-single air filter and they can't be replaced individually.

Recommended filter replacement is 3-in-1 True HEPA Filter Kit (HRF-Z2) by Honeywell.

Note: filter replacement kit is not cheap, but in order for unit to operate properly, one has to use OEM filters. Non-OEM filters are cheaper, but their quality is often questionable. After all, air filters are replaced on average only once a year - go for OEM filters and don't look any further.

Honeywell HPA600B vs. Honeywell HPA300 HEPA Air Purifiers

Both Honeywell HPA600B and Honeywell HPA300 are true HEPA air purifiers, but they differ in many very important details.

Honeywell HPA300 is very popular model, cheaper than Honeywell HPA600B, but has better CADR rating and it is recommended for larger rooms. Their features and specifications are given in the following table:

However, Honeywell HPA600B consumes less power (and is more energy efficient), has even better air filtration and features Air Quality Indicator and Auto Sense Mode.

Both units feature 5-year limited warranty, shut off time, and they lack WiFi connectivity.

Long Story Short: If you are looking for a large, high capacity air purifier with extra good air filtration and you don't need WiFi connectivity, consider Honeywell HPA600B unit.

And if you don't need Auto Sense Mode with Air Quality Indicator with slightly inferior air filtration (but still true HEPA air filtration!), but better CADR ratings at lower cost, consider Honeywell HPA300 air purifier.
