What To Look For When Buying Levoit Air Purifier?

When looking for an air purifier, there are a few things to look for, including:

Air Filtration

Air filtration is probably the most important feature of any air purifier.

"True HEPA" air purifier is able to capture at least 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles and technically stands between HEPA H13 and HEPA H14 levels.

The size of most common pollutants in homes are:

- flu virus: 0.1 μm,

- bacteria: 0.3-10.0 μm,

- pollen: 10.0-100.0 μm,

- pet and human hair: 30.0-200.0 μm,

- dust mites: 90.0-600.0 μm,

- sand grains: 50.0-1000.0 μm, etc.

Note: While flu and similar viruses are rather small and hardly directly captured by air purifiers, if present, they are found in micro-droplets in the air that are mostly much larger than 0.1 μm.

Personally, a good air purifier should feature at least an H13 level of air purification (99.95%; 0.3μm particles), preferably combined with an active charcoal layer that removes odors, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and similar.

CADR Rating

CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating is measured by ANSI/AHAM AC-1 standard.

The air purifier is placed in a 1008 cubic feet testing chamber, with the number of air pollutants measured - the air purifier operates for 20 minutes at full power and the reduction of air pollutants is measured.

For example, if the air purifier has a CADR rating of 100 for dust particles, it is able to reduce dust particle levels to the same level as it would be achieved by adding 100 cubic feet of clean air each minute.

CADR ratings often vary according to the particles filtered, with common values for home air purifiers given in the following list:

- Dust: 10 to 400 CADR,

- Pollen: 25 to 450 CADR,

- Tobacco Smoke: 10 to 450 CADR, etc.

The larger the CADR rating is, the larger area that the air purifier can keep clean.

CFM Rating

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating shows how many cubic feet of air an air purifier can clean per minute. CFM is usually given for the fastest fan speed.

Fan Speed

Depending on the model and intended use, Levoit air purifiers feature several fan speeds which include Sleep Mode, Standard Mode, and Turbo Mode, while some models feature even more fan speeds.

Auto Mode

Some advanced air purifier models feature air quality sensors that measure the amount of air pollution and automatically adjust the fan speed if required.

Noise

Since air purifiers feature an active fan, they are not noiseless. However, in Standard Mode and especially in Sleep Mode most Levoit air purifiers are very quiet with very low noise levels.

Remote Control and WiFi Connectivity

While some models are intentionally designed to be as simple as possible (and are highly appreciated by their users), some models feature remote control and WiFi connectivity.

Wifi connectivity not only provides means of remote control over an air purifier, but it also gives the user various other options, including monitoring of air purifier condition (filters included), setting the air purifier, etc.

Personally, WiFi connectivity is a great thing, App support is a great thing, but the simplicity also has its benefits - just place the unit in the permanent position, set it to desired fan speed, and forget about it until some maintenance is required.

Maintenance

Levoit air purifiers are very easy to maintain - clean the air filter using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush every 1-3 weeks (as required) and replace the air filter when required.

Most units warn the user when it is time to replace the air filter either by signaling LED, sound, or via a smartphone App.
