10 Best Vacuums for Hardwood Floors for 2021
Hardwood floors are one of the most common floor types at homes and apartments, they are warm, great looking, but also they represent certain challenges regarding cleaning and maintenance.
A good hardwood vacuum cleaner may be of great help for keeping even sensitive hardwood floors clean and scratch-free. Here are the lists of various vacuum types with short descriptions and explanations.

On this page:
Good hardwood vacuum cleaner must feature good suction, good, preferably HEPA air filtration, it must be able to collect and store the required amount of dirt onboard and be able to get rid of the dirt quickly, easily and the most important cleanly, it must be gentle to the sensitive hardwood, laminate, and similar floors, it should be easy to maintain, etc.
Also, a good hardwood vacuum cleaner must be able to clean hard-to-reach areas, stairs, edges, corners, but also elevated surfaces, commonly found at homes, like beds, sofas, furniture, air vents, etc.
A single vacuum cleaner that fulfills all these criteria is hard to find, especially at a low price, but if one digs slightly deeper, there are rather affordable, well-designed units, that fits perfectly.
However, some of the models listed here are quite expensive, but they are worth every single cent and are in the end, very popular models, despite their price.
Suction strength is one of the most important features of a good hardwood vacuum.
As the main cleaner nozzle glide over the bare floor, suction picks up the pet and human hair, dust, lint, pollen, and other types of dirt.
Suction varies from vacuum to vacuum - smaller cordless units feature air suction in the range of 50-100 Air Watts, but some corded upright vacuums feature 300+ Air Watts - and that is a lot of suction.
Motorized brushroll or not - some hardwood vacuums feature rotating brushrolls optimized for sensitive bare floors, but some units come with the brushrolls more optimized for general cleaning, including medium- and high-pile carpets.
Brushrolls optimized for carpets may be too 'aggressive' for sensitive hardwood and laminate floors and should be turned off when vacuuming sensitive floors.
For vacuuming extra sensitive floors and for general vacuuming of bare floors, some models have a nozzle with gentle natural fibers that agitate floor dirt without scratching the floors.
Such nozzles may be either main cleaning nozzle or be available as separate cleaning tool that is attached to the flexible cleaning hose as needed.
Bagged or bagless vacuums - disposable vacuum bags with self-locking auto-seal collars are excellent, although not the cheapest way of dirt disposal, while reusable vacuum bags are 'ideal to make a mess' (I may be biased regarding reusable vacuum bags).
Bagless units feature dirt cups/bins that mostly allow the user to empty the dirt directly into the trashcan, without ever the user touching the dirt. Bagless units are most popular, although I personally favor disposable vacuum bags.
Corded or cordless - Autonomy of the cordless units depends on the energy stored at the onboard battery, while autonomy of the corded units depends on the length of their power cords and, if present, of their flexible cleaning hoses.
Cordless units may be used as excellent emergency vacuums as well - just grab one and use it within seconds, since there is no need to unwrap or pull out the cable, and to plug it into the wall power socket.
On the other hand, cordless units are generally weaker vacuums, but some modern units powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries feature suction strength equivalent to the corded units.
HEPA air filtration or not - there are several levels of air filtration that is labeled as 'HEPA'. The following chart lists various classifications of EPA/HEPA/ULPA filters and air filtration according to the EN 1822 standard:
|Filter Group||Filter Class||Filtration Efficiency||Penetration|
|Efficiency Particulate Air (EPA) Filters||E10||85 %||15 %|
|E11||95 %||5 %|
|E12||99.5 %||0.5 %|
|High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters||H13||99.95 %||0.05 %|
|H14||99.995 %||0.005 %|
|Ultra-Low Penetration Air (ULPA) Filters||U15||99.9995 %||0.0005 %|
|U16||99.99995 %||0.00005 %|
|U17||99.999995 %||0.000005 %|
Note: In the European Union air filtration is defined by standard EN 1822, which defines several classes of EPA/HEPA/ULPA air filters and air filtration levels according to their ability to retain or capture the Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS) particles that are in the 0.1 and 0.3 micrometers range.
In the US, however, 'true HEPA' air filtration commonly means the ability of the air filter or vacuum cleaner to retain or capture at least 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles. Thus, 'true HEPA' is between H13 and H14 filter classes.
For short, if some manufacturer labels their units as HEPA vacuums and writes down that it is, for example, E11 HEPA level, be aware that such unit although labeled as HEPA, doesn't feature good air filtration system. On the contrary ...
Personally, I prefer when the manufacturer states exactly the air filtration level of their vacuum cleaners - for example, 99.9% of 0.3 microns or larger and similar.
Vacuum types - preferred vacuum type depends greatly on the personal choices of the user. Some people prefer uprights, some people like canister vacuums, other people like lightweight convertible stick vacuums, etc.
Every vacuum cleaner type has its benefits and drawbacks and we will discuss more about them later.

Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is a 2-in-1 convertible stick/handheld, cordless, bagless vacuum cleaner. Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is one of the most powerful cordless units on the market, comparable with the corded units as well.

The main cleaner head features a cleaning path width of 8.6 inches (~22 cm), and in combination with a pair of edge brushes enables the user to clean a relatively large area quickly, leaving no spot uncleaned, especially along the baseboards and edges.
Another interesting feature of Shark ION F80 (IF281) MultiFLEX is its wand that helps the user to more easily clean under beds, sofas, and similar objects.
The low profile of the main cleaner head and its strong LED headlights also come in handy when cleaning such narrow, low-lit areas.
Dirt cup capacity is 0.3 dry quarts and it may be larger. However, a transparent dirt cup may be emptied quickly and easily.
Additional cleaning tools include an 8" crevice tool and upholstery tool.
Operating time of the single, fully charged battery depends on the cleaning mode:

Bissell 2254 CleanView is rated at 8 Amps (~960 watts) and is powered with 27 feet (~8.2 m) long power cord. This unit is one of few upright vacuums that feature an automatic power cord rewind system - call me lazy, but for me, this is a great plus.
Also, the unit comes with 8 feet (~2.4 m) long flexible cleaning hose and a set of cleaning tools that includes Combination Dusting Brush/Upholstery Tool, Crevice Tool, Pet TurboEraser Tool, and Pet Hair Corner Tool, allowing the user to clean both floors and elevated surfaces.
Bissell 2254 CleanView weighs 17.63 pounds (~8.0 kg) and features a swivel mechanism, allowing the unit to be rather maneuverable, despite not being the lightest upright vacuum around.
The main cleaner head features a cleaning path of 13.5 inches (~34.3 cm) and dual-edge cleaning brushes. Bissell 2254 CleanView comes with the so-called 'Triple Action' brushroll and cleans thoroughly hardwood and laminate floors, tiles, carpets, area rugs, and similar.
Note: brushroll cannot be turned off, but it is gentle enough to be used on sensitive floors, too. However, just in case, if you have rather sensitive floors, test it on a small area.
The main cleaner head features 5 settings manual height adjusting system, which may be very helpful when vacuuming sensitive floors.
Dirt bin capacity is 1 liter, and it features a bottom-empty system, allowing the user to detach the dirt bin from the unit and empty it directly into the trash can, quickly and easily, without making additional mess.
Multilayered air filtration does a very good job, although Bissell doesn't state the HEPA air filtration level - actually, they state that the Bissell 2254 is not sealed to be considered HEPA vacuum cleaner.
Air filtration is based on the cyclonic action, combined with carbon and foam pre-motor air filters and one post-motor air filter.
If you are looking for a large, full-size, bagless upright vacuum cleaner that is suitable for keeping your home clean and it doesn't cost a small fortune, consider this model. There are many other reasons why it is one of the most popular models in its class.

8. Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner is a cordless, bagless, convertible, 2-in-1 stick/handheld vacuum cleaner, suitable for both general cleaning and cleaning in emergencies.
Its performances are very similar to Dyson V8 Absolute - Tineco A11 Master is rated at 450 watts and features suction in Max. Suction mode of 120 Air Watts (Dyson V8 - 115 AW).
Tineco A11 Master follows the same design of other Tineco's cordless units, differing mostly in the number and size of the batteries, color, available attachments and few more details, including the price.
The maximum operating time of the Tineco A11 Master is up to 60 minutes (using both 2500 mAh batteries that come with the unit by default) and the operating time in the Max Suction mode is 15 minutes (using both batteries).
The list of cleaning tools is rather long: Multifloor Motorized Brushroll with LEDs, Mini Power Brush, Crevice Tool, 2-in-1 Dusting Brush, Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush, Soft Dusting Brush, Flexible Extension Hose, Flexible Multi-Angle Wand, and Long Flexible Crevice Tool.
Also, Tineco A11 Master includes Hair Cleaning Tool, Filter Cleaning Tool, and Spare Pre-Filter.
Such a long list of cleaning tools ensures that the user is able to clean practically any surface found at most homes and apartments.
Tineco A11 Master main cleaner heads are Multifloor Motorized Brushroll and Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush. While Multifloor Motorized Brushroll is good for general cleaning, including bare floors and carpets, Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush is recommended for vacuuming of sensitive hardwood and laminate floors.
Dirt cup capacity is 0.6 liters, which is enough for most cleaning tasks.
Tineco A11 Master air filtration system is based on cyclonic action and two washable mechanical air filters. While the post-motor air filter is labeled as a HEPA air filter, Tineco doesn't state the actual HEPA grade of this filter. Nonetheless, air filtration is good.
Although Tineco manufactures newer and more powerful Tineco Pure One S12 Plus Cordless Stick Vacuum (500 W, 150 AW, larger batteries, similar set of cleaning tools), Tineco A11 Master is still the preferred model over Tineco Pure One S12 Plus.
When compared with Dyson V8 Absolute, Tineco A11 Master feature stronger suction (120 vs 115 AW), faster charging (3.5 vs 5 hours), and a larger dirt bin (0.6 vs 0.5 liters). Dyson V8 feature somewhat shorter cleaning tools and attachments list, but nonetheless, they are also rather versatile, if not even more than the Tineco's. Dyson V8 Absolute is a true HEPA vacuum cleaner, while Tineco A11 Master is probably not.
If you are looking for a cordless, bagless unit that will help you keep your floors and elevated surfaces clean, hardwood floors included, consider the Tineco A11 master, especially if it can be found on sale.

10. iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Having a robot vacuum cleaner can be of great help when maintaining floors clean, hardwood floors included. But, IMHO, the main issue with robot vacuums is small dirt cups and the need to empty them practically on a daily basis when the unit is scheduled to clean daily.
iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner solves this 'issue' via an automatic dirt disposal system which, in theory, is able to store 30 days of vacuumed dirt.
Again, call me lazy, but this is great :)
iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner is NOT the only unit on the market with such features, but it is one of the best buy systems, considering the price and features.
As a robot vacuum, iRobot Roomba i7 also features iAdapt 3.0 Navigation with Visual Localization and Imprint Smart Mapping, both enabling features like Recharge and Resume, Multi-Room Cleaning, Clean or Schedule by Room, Clean Map Reports, Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barriers, Custom Cleaning Preferences, etc.
Obviously, iRobot Roomba i7+ is a WiFi-enabled unit and the best way to control the unit is via iRobot HOME App. Also, iRobot Roomba i7+ supports the use of Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant.
If you are looking for a low-maintenance robot vacuum cleaner that will help you keep your bare, low- and medium-pile carpets clean, consider this unit. Robot vacuum can't replace full-size vacuum cleaner and human hand when cleaning but can save plenty of time and effort.
For the most up-to-date offers and prices, check iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner Amazon link (link opens in the new window).
That is our top 10 list of the best vacuums for hardwood floors. However, with all the different brands and vacuuming/cleaning systems suitable for keeping sensitive hardwood and laminate floors clean, there are few more models worth mentioning.
So, here are a few 'bonus' models:
11. Tineco Floor One S3 Cordless Hard Floor Wet-Dry Vacuum Cleaner/Washer
Basically, Tineco Floor One S3 is a 2-in-1 unit, combining a hard floor vacuum and mop in one, cordless unit.
Tineco Floor One S3 is based on the design of previous similar Tineco's cleaners (Tineco iFloor, Tineco iFloor3), sharing the same basic design, but coming with several important improvements.
Floors are cleaned via rotating soft brushroll, which is kept moist using the cleaning liquid from the Clear Water Tank (CWT), combined with a strong suction that removes any excess moisture and dirt, leaving hardwood floors clean and just slightly moist.
All collected dirt is stored in a Dirty Water Tank (DWT), which is easy to empty and clean.
Tineco Floor One S3 also features a Self-wash feature, iLoop dirt sensor, various sensors that monitor the unit's performance and provide the required information on the LCD digital display.
Also, Tineco Floor One S3 is WiFi enable unit, supporting the use of the Tineco smartphone App which provides users with all relevant information about their unit, but also helps with maintenance, providing reminders, technical tips, and support.
Air filtration is based on the washable HEPA air filter, which is very important not only for people having issues with asthma and allergies.
Note that Tineco Floor One S3 comes with a spare brushroll and a spare HEPA air filter - while one HEPA air filter is being air-dried, another is placed into the unit, making the unit ready to be used at the moment notice.

12. Bissell 2075A PowerFresh Slim Hard Wood Floor Steam Cleaner System
Bissell 2075A is a convertible steam mop cleaner, suitable for steam cleaning both floors and elevated surfaces, but it can also be used as a clothes steamer, for example.
In the floor steam mop configuration, the unit weighs 6.4 pounds (~2.9 kg), which is relatively heavy for a steam mop, but still very light.
The power cord is 25 feet (~7.6 m) long, ensuring a typical cleaning range comparable with other steam mops. The onboard water heater requires some 30 seconds to start to produce the steam.
Bissell 2075A PowerFresh comes with a long list of cleaning tools: Flat Surface Tool, Flat Scraper Tool, Bristle Brush, Detail Brush, Angle Concentrator Tool, Grout Brush, and Clothing Steamer Tool and is suitable for cleaning bare floors, countertops, sealed hard floors, pet beds, clothing, children's toys, upholstery, etc.
Bissell 2075A PowerFresh features 13 inches (~33 cm) wide cleaning path and 11.8 oz (~340 ml) water tank.
For cleaning bare floors, Bissell 2075A PowerFresh uses washable microfiber pads in combination with variable steam levels ('Steam On-Demand').
Note: using just the steam, steam mops, in general, can easily sanitize the floors by killing on average 99.9% of various floor germs - excellent, not only for people with pets, kids, and similar. However, when steam cleaning hardwood floors, floor finish must be certified for such cleaning and without cracks, or steam (moisture) can penetrate the wood and cause it to rot and buckle over time (years, even decades).
This warning goes not only for Bissell 2075A PowerFresh owners, but for all people considering cleaning hardwood floors with steam mops - it is a great thing, but be careful not to cause any damage! And when steam cleaning hardwood floors, keep the steam to the minimum, at least in the beginning!
Bissell 2075A PowerFresh comes with a 2-year limited warranty.
