10 Best Vacuums for Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are one of the most common floor types in homes and apartments, they are warm, great looking, but also they represent certain challenges regarding cleaning and maintenance.
A good hardwood vacuum cleaner may be of great help for keeping even sensitive hardwood floors clean and scratch-free. Here is the list of various vacuum types with short descriptions and explanations.
Updated: May 20, 2023.
On This Page:
Required Features and Specifications of the Good Hardwood Vacuum Cleaner
The good hardwood vacuum cleaner must feature good suction, good, preferably HEPA air filtration, it must be able to collect and store the required amount of dirt onboard and be able to get rid of the dirt quickly, easily, and most important cleanly, it must be gentle to the sensitive hardwood, laminate, and similar floors, it should be easy to maintain, etc.
Also, a good hardwood vacuum cleaner must be able to clean hard-to-reach areas, stairs, edges, corners, but also elevated surfaces, commonly found in homes, like beds, sofas, furniture, air vents, etc.
A single vacuum cleaner that fulfills all these criteria is hard to find, especially at a low price, but if one digs slightly deeper, there are rather affordable, well-designed units, that fit perfectly.
However, some of the models listed here are quite expensive, but they are worth every single cent and are in the end, very popular models, despite their price.
Suction Strength
Suction strength is one of the most important features of a good hardwood vacuum.
As the main cleaner nozzle glide over the bare floor, suction picks up the pet and human hair, dust, lint, pollen, and other types of dirt.
Suction varies from vacuum to vacuum - smaller cordless units feature air suction in the range of 50-100 Air Watts, but some corded upright vacuums feature 300+ Air Watts - and that is a lot of suction.
However, in many situations when vacuuming wood flooring, suction on its own is not enough - a good hardwood vacuum cleaner should combine strong suction with a mechanical means of agitating the floor dirt, in many cases, a motorized brushroll.
Motorized Brushrolls
Motorized brushroll or not - some hardwood vacuums feature rotating brushrolls optimized for sensitive bare floors, but some units come with the brushrolls more optimized for general cleaning, including medium- and high-pile carpets.
Brushrolls optimized for carpets may be too 'aggressive' for sensitive hardwood and laminate floors and should be turned off when vacuuming sensitive floors.
Also, some models come with different brushrolls that are quickly swapped when vacuuming sensitive bare floors - multi-floor brushrolls are used for carpeted surfaces and for general cleaning of bare floors, while soft brushrolls are used for vacuuming sensitive hardwood and similar floors.
Self-cleaning brushrolls feature hair wrap removal technology that automatically removes wrapped hair from the brushrolls, greatly simplifying maintenance of the vacuum cleaner.
For vacuuming extra sensitive floors and for general vacuuming of bare floors, some models have a nozzle with gentle natural fibers that agitate floor dirt without scratching the floors.
Such nozzles may be either the main cleaning nozzle or be available as separate cleaning tool that is attached to the flexible cleaning hose as needed.
The list of available accessories may be very important when choosing the right vacuum cleaner.
Rubber Wheels
Soft rubberized wheels are very important for leaving no scratches on the wooden floors.
Vacuum cleaners with plastic wheels may be suitable for carpeted areas, tiles, and similar surfaces, but they may leave scratches on sensitive floors.
Bagged or Bagless Vacuums
Disposable vacuum bags with self-locking auto-seal collars are excellent, although not the cheapest way of dirt disposal, while reusable vacuum bags are "ideal to make a mess".
Note: The author of this article may be a little bit biased regarding reusable vacuum bags.
Bagless units feature dirt cups/bins that mostly allow the user to empty the dirt directly into the trashcan, without ever the user touching the dirt. Bagless units are most popular, although I personally favor disposable vacuum bags.
Corded or Cordless Vacuums
The autonomy of the cordless units depends on the energy stored at the onboard battery, while the autonomy of the corded units depends on the length of their power cords and, if present, their flexible cleaning hoses.
Cordless units may be used as excellent emergency vacuums as well - just grab one and use it within seconds, since there is no need to unwrap or pull out the cable, and plug it into the wall power socket.
On the other hand, cordless units are generally weaker vacuums, but some modern units powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries feature suction strength equivalent to the corded units.
Swivel Steering
Swivel steering in combination with a lightweight design ensures good maneuverability and easy cleaning around and under most common floor objects and obstacles, like walls, stairs, furniture, and similar.
Easy to maneuver vacuums can save both time and effort, helping users to complete cleaning tasks faster and easier.
HEPA Air Filtration
Air filtration is very important for many reasons - actual levels of air filtration of the vacuums on the market can differ significantly.
There are several levels of air filtration that are labeled as "HEPA Filtration".
The following chart lists various classifications of EPA/HEPA/ULPA filters and air filtration according to the EN 1822 standard:
Filter Group | Filter Class | Filtration Efficiency | Penetration |
Efficiency Particulate Air (EPA) Filters | E10 | 85 % | 15 % |
E11 | 95 % | 5 % | |
E12 | 99.5 % | 0.5 % | |
High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters | H13 | 99.95 % | 0.05 % |
H14 | 99.995 % | 0.005 % | |
Ultra-Low Penetration Air (ULPA) Filters | U15 | 99.9995 % | 0.0005 % |
U16 | 99.99995 % | 0.00005 % | |
U17 | 99.999995 % | 0.000005 % |
Note: In the European Union air filtration is defined by standard EN 1822, which defines several classes of EPA/HEPA/ULPA air filters and air filtration levels according to their ability to retain or capture the Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS) particles that are in the 0.1 and 0.3 micrometers range.
In the US, however, 'true HEPA' air filtration commonly means the ability of the air filter or vacuum cleaner to retain or capture at least 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger particles. Thus, 'true HEPA' is between H13 and H14 filter classes.
For short, if some manufacturer labels their units as HEPA vacuums and writes down that it is, for example, E11 HEPA level, be aware that such unit although labeled as HEPA, doesn't feature a good air filtration system. On the contrary ...
Personally, I prefer when the manufacturer states exactly the air filtration level of their vacuum cleaners - for example, 99.9% of 0.3 microns or larger and similar.
"True HEPA" and H13+ vacuum cleaners are able to capture various allergens and small particles of dust and other dirt, making the vacuumed area much more pleasant to live in, not only for people having issues with asthma and allergies.
Types of Vacuums
The preferred vacuum type depends greatly on the personal choices of the user. Some people prefer uprights, some people like canister vacuums, other people like lightweight convertible stick vacuums, etc.
Every vacuum cleaner type has its benefits and drawbacks and we will discuss more of them later.
The most popular models are upright vacuums with additional cleaning hoses and convertible lightweight stick vacuums, although wet-dry hardwood vacuums are also gaining in popularity. Robot vacuums combined with automatic dirt disposal units can save users plenty of time and effort, but they can't actually replace main vacuum cleaners.

Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is a 2-in-1 convertible stick/handheld, cordless, bagless vacuum cleaner. Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute is one of the most powerful cordless units on the market, comparable with the corded units as well.

12. Miele Complete C2 Hard Floor Canister Vacuum Cleaner
Thanks to the flexible cleaning hose and stainless steel telescopic wand, the unit is able to reach and clean surfaces from the floor to the ceiling.
Miele Complete C2 Hard Floor is rated at 1200 watts (10 Amps), but it is also designed to be very quiet during operation. The power cord is ~21 feet (~6.5 m) long and in combination with the flexible cleaning hose, telescopic wand, and additional cleaning tools, the unit features ~33 feet (~10 m) long cleaning reach.
The unit features an automatic power cord rewind system, enabling the user to store the power cord with the simple press of the control button.
The physical dimensions of the unit are (LxH) ~19.2 x 9 inches (~49 x 23 cm) and it weighs 8.80 pounds (~4 kg). Unit is relatively lightweight to be carried around - canister in one hand, cleaning wand in another.
Suction control is electronic, using a selector with 6 positions: curtains and sensitive fabrics, upholstery and cushions, high-pile carpets and rugs, energy-saving (very quiet) vacuuming, low pile carpets, and rugs, and hard floors, and heavily soiled carpets and rugs.
Air filtration is based on disposable AirClean 3D Efficiency GN Type vacuum bags (traps 99,9% of dust particles), motor protection air filter, and either Miele Active AirClean 50 Filter or Miele HEPA AirClean SF-HA 50 air filters, which trap 99.95% of 0.3 microns or larger particles.

Miele Complete C2 Hard Floor comes with Miele SBD 285-3 Smooth Floor Brush, optimized for bare, sensitive floors, but it may also be used on low-pile carpets as well.
Also, the unit comes with Miele SBB 400-3 Parquet Twister XL Smooth Floor Brush, intended for vacuuming rather sensitive wooden floors.
Additional cleaning tools include a dusting brush, upholstery tool, and crevice tool and are all carried on board the unit.
While it may be not the best choice for high-pile carpets and similar surfaces, Miele Complete C2 Hard Floor is an excellent canister, bagged unit, being able to clean large bare areas, hardwood floors included, rather quickly.

13. iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner
iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner is an advanced automatic floor cleaning system combining the iRobot Roomba i7 robot vacuum cleaner with an automatic dirt disposal system.
Having a robot vacuum cleaner can be of great help when maintaining floors clean, hardwood floors included. But, IMHO, the main issue with robot vacuums is small dirt cups and the need to empty them practically on a daily basis when the unit is scheduled to clean daily.
iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner solves this 'issue' via an automatic dirt disposal system which, in theory, is able to store 30 days of vacuumed dirt.
Again, call me lazy, but this is great :)
iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum Cleaner is NOT the only unit on the market with such features, but it is one of the best buy systems, considering the price and features.
As a robot vacuum, iRobot Roomba i7 also features iAdapt 3.0 Navigation with Visual Localization and Imprint Smart Mapping, both enabling features like Recharge and Resume, Multi-Room Cleaning, Clean or Schedule by Room, Clean Map Reports, Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barriers, Custom Cleaning Preferences, etc.
Obviously, iRobot Roomba i7+ is a WiFi-enabled unit and the best way to control the unit is via iRobot HOME App. Also, iRobot Roomba i7+ supports the use of Amazon Alexa and Google Home Assistant.
If you are looking for a low-maintenance robot vacuum cleaner that will help you keep your bare, low- and medium-pile carpets clean, consider this unit. Robot vacuums can't replace full-size vacuum cleaners and human hands when cleaning but can save plenty of time and effort.

14. Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Tineco A11 Master Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner is a cordless, bagless, convertible, 2-in-1 stick/handheld vacuum cleaner, suitable for both general cleaning and cleaning in emergencies.
Its performances are very similar to Dyson V8 Absolute - Tineco A11 Master is rated at 450 watts and features suction in Max. Suction mode of 120 Air Watts (Dyson V8 - 115 AW).
Tineco A11 Master follows the same design as other Tineco cordless units, differing mostly in the number and size of the batteries, color, available attachments, and a few more details, including the price.
The maximum operating time of the Tineco A11 Master is up to 60 minutes (using both 2500 mAh batteries that come with the unit by default) and the operating time in the Max Suction mode is 15 minutes (using both batteries).
The list of cleaning tools is rather long: Multifloor Motorized Brushroll with LEDs, Mini Power Brush, Crevice Tool, 2-in-1 Dusting Brush, Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush, Soft Dusting Brush, Flexible Extension Hose, Flexible Multi-Angle Wand, and Long Flexible Crevice Tool.
Also, Tineco A11 Master includes Hair Cleaning Tool, Filter Cleaning Tool, and Spare Pre-Filter.
Such a long list of cleaning tools ensures that the user is able to clean practically any surface found in most homes and apartments.
Tineco A11 Master main cleaner heads are Multifloor Motorized Brushroll and Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush. While Multifloor Motorized Brushroll is good for general cleaning, including bare floors and carpets, Bare Floor Soft Roller Brush is recommended for vacuuming of sensitive hardwood and laminate floors.
Dirt cup capacity is 0.6 liters, which is enough for most cleaning tasks.
Tineco A11 Master air filtration system is based on cyclonic action and two washable mechanical air filters. While the post-motor air filter is labeled as a HEPA air filter, Tineco doesn't state the actual HEPA grade of this filter. Nonetheless, air filtration is good.
Although Tineco manufactures newer and more powerful Tineco Pure One S12 Plus Cordless Stick Vacuum (500 W, 150 AW, larger batteries, similar set of cleaning tools), Tineco A11 Master is still the preferred model over Tineco Pure One S12 Plus.
When compared with Dyson V8 Absolute, Tineco A11 Master feature stronger suction (120 vs 115 AW), faster charging (3.5 vs 5 hours), and a larger dirt bin (0.6 vs 0.5 liters). Dyson V8 features a somewhat shorter cleaning tools and attachments list, but nonetheless, they are also rather versatile, if not even more than the Tineco's. Dyson V8 Absolute is a true HEPA vacuum cleaner, while Tineco A11 Master is probably not.
If you are looking for a cordless, bagless unit that will help you keep your floors and elevated surfaces clean, hardwood floors included, consider the Tineco A11 master, especially if it can be found on sale.
