BLE Vacuum vs. WiFi Vacuum - Smart Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners are becoming an integral part of smart homes, especially robot vacuums with automatic dirt disposal units, voice commands, reporting, advanced mapping, Recharge and Resume, and other features.

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) vacuums and WiFi-enabled vacuums allow the users to control and monitor their vacuums via smartphones and tablets, often while being away from home. But, many users ask what the differences are between BLE vacuums and WiFi vacuums.

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) vs. WiFi (Wireless Fidelity)

BLE and WiFi are wireless data technologies that ensure the transfer of information without requiring wires (network or similar cables), greatly simplifying the organization of small networks and connecting/pairing of different devices via standardized protocols.

But, these two technologies differ in used frequencies, output power, range, and many less known features, for example, mesh networking and similar.

In many ways, BLE and WiFi also have many similarities.

The most important differences and similarities include:

- As its name suggests, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) uses/requires less power than WiFi, which can be very important for small devices with limited energy storage - vacuum cleaners with high-capacity lithium batteries store more than enough energy even for WiFi modules,

- Bluetooth technology allows direct pairing/connecting between devices and smartphones, while WiFi-enabled devices usually require some sort of WiFi network to be already present - which is generally not a problem,

- WiFi networks feature greater network speed,

- WiFi networks have a greater range, etc.

BLE technology is mostly used in small devices like headsets and similar, allowing direct connection from the smartphone to the device.

On the other hand, WiFi technology (with few additional services) enables connection between device and smartphone even over the internet, allowing the users to connect to their smart homes regardless if they are at home or on another continent.

IR (Infra Red), BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), and WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) Technologies in Vacuum Cleaners

IR (Infra Red), BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), and WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) are commonly used in various types of vacuum cleaners for different purposes:

  • IR (Infra Red) remote controllers are commonly used in cheaper and simpler robot vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, simplifying the design and making the units more affordable.

Note: Units with IR remote controls are often very liked models with excellent performances - they are simply not designed to support WiFi or BLE connectivity.

  • BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) vacuum cleaners can be controlled and monitored directly using smartphones, and thanks to two-way connections, smartphones are able to provide status information about the unit.
  • WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) vacuum cleaners rely on a WiFi network for two-way communication with smartphones. Since the connection is rarely direct, many vacuum cleaner smartphone apps support monitoring and controlling the vacuum cleaner from the internet while away from home.

Because of all these reasons, vacuum cleaners generally don't use Bluetooth connectivity - for direct control of units, IR remote controllers are used, while for more advanced units, WiFi connectivity combined with smartphone Apps are used.

Examples Of WiFi Enabled Vacuum Cleaners

WiFi technology is typically used in robot vacuums, but it is becoming more and more common in other vacuum cleaner types.

Long Story Short: Smart vacuums are here to stay - they can save plenty of time and effort and improve the quality of life.

Robot vacuums are the way to go for people with large open areas, IMHO. However, robot vacuums cannot replace the stick, upright, and canister vacuum cleaners, at least not yet.

But, robot vacuums can clean the home while You are away, providing the information in real-time.

And robot vacuums with the onboard camera can even be used as small security robots. But that is another story ...
